GOT CHAINS?
BE PREPARED FOR CALVING SEASON
By Jake Bauer, DVM
Proper planning and preparation for the upcoming calving season will benefit not only you, but your cattle, and probably even your spouse. Few people are in good humor when aroused from sleep at 2 AM with the words, “Honey, where's the calf jack?” Prior to the start of calving, gather your equipment, clean it, and make the necessary repairs. Purchasing an inexpensive tool box or using a quality bucket can be helpful for storing your O.B. equipment.
The following is a list of equipment that you should have on hand:
O.B. chains or straps – a spare pair is also recommended
Chain handles (these will save wear and tear on your hands)
Sleeves (good sanitary practice and keep you cleaner)
O.B. Lube
Calf jack
Bucket for disinfectant/water to clean cow
Possible medications to have on hand to treat cow:
Oxytocin – used to contract uterus
Uterine Boluses
Parenteral Antibiotic (injection to ward off infection)
Possible medications to have on hand to treat calf:
Iodine dip for navel
Other treatment deemed necessary by owner such as Calfguard, etc.
Following these simple steps can save you headaches and time. When you take the time factor into account and the probability of a live/dead calf, that can also add money to your bottom line.
